At that time the Governor-General Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1814, the island of Java was under British control, received news that there was a large ancient building in the forest area near the village of Bumisegoro. 

So that makes Raffles send a man named HC Cornelius who is a Dutch engineer to investigate and confirm whether the building is an ancient building.

A Dutch East Indies official continued until 1835, Hartmann finished his work so that the temple building began to appear, triggering world scientists to conduct further research.

Through the process of excavation, which continues to be carried out but goes wrong, at a certain time, Borobudur Temple has also become a victim of loot, so that many statues from other parts are sold and owned by irresponsible parties, even from other countries.

So that the restoration process was stopped for various reasons, and in 1973, the Indonesian government submitted a request to the international community to restore this historical heritage.

With the help of UNESCO from 1975 to 1982, renovations were completely completed so that until now the Borobudur Temple became one of the world heritages in 1991.

There are 3 zones in Borobudur temple:
  • Kamadhatu. In the form of 160 wall reliefs with the explanation of the Karmawibhangga Sutra (the law of cause and effect). Symbolizes the natural world.
  • Rupadhatu. Consists of relief carvings and Buddha statues. There are approximately 328 buddha statues with decorative reliefs here. Symbolizes the transitional realm, nature where humans are free from world affairs.
  • Arupadhatu. This zone is a circular zone at the center of the temple, in the form of three ceramics that lead to a dome in the middle. This area is devoid of relief ornate, signifying the highest purity.
